Gene Name KRT18
Sequence Location Cytoplasm, perinuclear region. Nucleus, nucleolus.
Biological Function Involved in the uptake of thrombin-antithrombin complexes by hepatic cells (By similarity). When phosphorylated, plays a role in filament reorganization. Involved in the delivery of mutated CFTR to the plasma membrane. Together with KRT8, is involved in interleukin-6 (IL-6)-mediated barrier protection. {PubMed:15529338, PubMed:16424149, PubMed:17213200, PubMed:7523419, PubMed:8522591, PubMed:9298992, PubMed:9524113}.
Research Areas Cancer research
Background Cytokeratin 18 is a type I cytokeratin. Together with its filament partner cytokeratin 8, it is perhaps the most commonly found products of the intermediate filament gene family. They are expressed in single layer epithelial tissues. Mutations in this gene have been linked to cryptogenic cirrhosis. Multimers of cytokeratin 18 and cytokeratin 8 are present in simple, glandular, and transitional epithelial cells, but absent from stratified epithelial cells, and are found in adenocarcinomas of simple and glandular epithelium origin and poorly differentiated squamous carcinoma cells.
