Sequence Location Cell membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein. Cell junction, synapse, postsynaptic cell membrane. Note=Detected at glycinergic postsynapses in retina. Detected on dendritic spines on cultured neurons.
Biological Function Cell surface protein involved in cell-cell-interactions. Plays a role in the formation or maintenance of synaptic junctions via its interactions (via the extracellular domains) with neurexin family members. Plays a role in synaptic signal transmission. {PubMed:18434543, PubMed:21282647}.
Research Areas Neuroscience
Background Neuroligin-4 is a neuronal cell surface protein and a member of the type-B carboxylesterase- lipase protein family. Members of this family may act as splice site-specific ligands for beta- neurexins and may be involved in the formation and remodeling of central nervous system synapses. Neuroligin-4 interacts with discs large homolog 4 (DLG4). Mutations in this gene have been associated with autism and Asperger syndrome. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
