Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is the utilization of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies for detecting specific antigens in tissue sections and is an extraordinarily powerful tool for determining tissue distribution in situ of an antigen of interest in healthy and diseased tissues. IHC procedures have existed since the 1930s, but since then IHC techniques have developed further to include using detection antibodies labeled with enzymes, such as peroxidase and alkaline phosphatase, and fluorophores, such as fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC). Although thousands of antibodies are commercially available, not all antibodies perform well in IHC, so selection of appropriate antibodies is critical to obtaining meaningful IHC results.
