Alternative Names CAB2, Calcium channel voltage-dependent subunit β 2
Gene Name Cacnb2
Accession Number NP_446303
Sequence Location Cell membrane, sarcolemma, Peripheral membrane protein, Cytoplasmic side
Biological Function The beta subunit of voltage-dependent calcium channels contributes to the function of the calcium channel by increasing peak calcium current, shifting the voltage dependencies of activation and inactivation, modulating G protein inhibition and controlling the alpha-1 subunit membrane targeting. {PubMed:11604404, PubMed:12042350, PubMed:1370480}.
Research Areas Ion Channels
Background Ion channels are integral membrane proteins that help establish and control the small voltage gradient across the plasma membrane of living cells by allowing the flow of ions down their electrochemical gradient. Cavbeta subunits are involved in the transport of the pore-forming alpha1 subunit to the plasma membrane. They also shield an ER Retention signal on the alpha1 subunit, thereby guiding the pore- forming subunit to the target membrane.
