Target Name Brevican core protein
Target ID Brevican
Uniprot ID P55068
Alternative Names Brain-enriched hyaluronan-binding protein, BEHAB
Gene Name Bcan
Sequence Location [Isoform 1]: Secreted, extracellular space, extracellular matrix.; [Isoform 2]: Membrane; Lipid-anchor, GPI-anchor.
Biological Function May play a role in the terminally differentiating and the adult nervous system during postnatal development. Could stabilize interactions between hyaluronan (HA) and brain proteoglycans. Isoform 2 may function as a chondroitin sulfate-bearing cell surface receptor.
Research Areas Neuroscience
Background Brevican is the most abundant chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan in the extracellular matrix of the adult brain. It is a member of the lectican family of aggregating extracellular matrix proteoglycans that bear chondroitin sulfate (CS) chains. It is highly expressed in the central nervous system and is thought to stabilize synapses and inhibit neural plasticity. Brevican is secreted from astrocytes and neurons as a145kDa core protein that bears up to three covalently-linked CS chains. It is also is secreted as a 145kDa core protein without CS chains. When cleaved by extracellular glutamyl endopeptidases, a 55kDa N-terminal fragment is formed that contains the unique C-terminal epitope EAMESE.
