Mycobacterium tuberculosis Induction of Heme Oxygenase-1 Expression Is Dependent on Oxidative Stress and Reflects Treatment Outcomes

A newly published multi-author study offers new insights into the role of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in the pathogenesis of tuberculosis (TB) and substantiates earlier proposals that HO-1 can be a useful biomarker of active TB infection.  HO-1 expression was greatly increased in TB infections in laboratory animals as well as in human patients, whereas levels of HO-1 decreased dramatically in patients who were successfully treated for TB.  A previously undocumented pathway that links HO-1 expression with oxidative stress in cases of TB is described.

Three outstanding Anti-HO-1-specific monoclonal antibodies from QED Bioscience can be used in Western blotting and ELISA to detect HO-1 of multiple species and are well-suited for studies of HO-1 and its role in TB.
